Doan named NHL's First Star

GLENDALE -- The National Hockey League announced today that Phoenix Coyotes Captain Shane Doan has been named the NHL’s First Star for the week ending Jan. 31.  Ottawa Senators goaltender Brian Elliot was named the second star while Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom was named the third star.

Doan led all NHL scorers last week with nine points on three goals and six assists, as well as a +5 rating, to help the Coyotes (33-18-5) win four consecutive games and climb to fourth place in the Western Conference standings.  Doan tallied three assists, including two in the final 1:30 of regulation to force overtime, and notched the game-winning goal in the extra period of a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, Jan. 26.

He recorded one assist in a 3-2 shootout win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday, Jan. 28, then scored a goal in a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday, Jan. 30.  The following day, Doan registered a goal and two assists in a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars.

The Coyotes’ win over Dallas yesterday marked their 33rd win of the season in the 56th game, the fastest they have reached that total in the 30-year history of the franchise.

For the season, Doan leads the Coyotes in scoring with 17-26-43 and has tallied 15 points (5-10-15) in the last eight games, during which the Coyotes have gone 6-2-0.

The 6-foot-1, 228-pound Doan is on pace to lead the Coyotes in scoring for a sixth straight campaign and reach the 20-goal mark for a 10th consecutive season, which would be a franchise record.
