Sundogs shut out by Eagles
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – After owning the league’s longest road winning streak two games prior, the Arizona Sundogs dropped their second straight game away from Tim’s Toyota Center and were shut out for just the third time this season, falling 2-0 to the Colorado Eagles Friday night at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colorado.
Goaltender Doug Groenestege kept Arizona within striking distance the entire night turning aside 40 of 42 shots on net but Colorado’s Mike Mole held the visiting Sundogs scoreless with 28 saves.
Ryan Tobler netted the eventual game-winner, his 23rd goal of the season, from Riley Nelson and Kevin Ulanski to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead midway through the second period.
Stationed at the back post, Tobler redirected a Nelson centering feed past Groenestege at 11:31 of the period.
Ed McGrane tallied an insurance marker 5:22 into the final period converting on a second-chance rebound after Groenestege steered aside a one-time effort from the slot.
Jay Birnie and Alex Penner assisted on McGrane’s team-leading 29th of the season.
Adam Smyth picked up his second fighting major since joining the Sundogs, exchanging blows with Penner in an evenly contest bout two seconds after the Eagles opened a one-goal lead in the middle frame.
Colorado outshot Arizona, 42-28, in the contest. Both clubs were 0-for-6 with the man-advantage.
